Adressing your management concerns
SMARTRAC is a capacity building program designed for MFIs that wish to improve their skills for managing and monitoring risks and sustainable performance. The tools offered by SMARTRAC are inspired by mainstream banking guidelines such as Basel II and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The program provides local and international expertise to address topics identified during the quick scan.

“Twinning” with national consultants in coaching methodology.
In the SMARTRAC project we explicitly applied a “twinning” approach to coach the participating MFIs. With twinning we mean that in each coaching project there was always a Triodos Facet senior consultant ánd an experienced national consultant. In this way the MFIs (our clients) benefited in various ways:
•  Getting access to global standards of best practice, fine-tuned to the national context of legislation and approach (the “twinning” of consultants);
•  Having rapid onsite expertise available in case of crises or urgent demands in specific risk/reporting aspects (national consultant’s rapid availability);
• Obtaining long-term risk/sustainability reporting expertise access, after closure of the project, as national capacity is gradually build with the availability of national consultants.

Mr. Carr is a financial sector/private sector and capacity building consultant. He is trained in economics, and financial policy analysis and management, with practical knowledge in banking and research methods. He has provided management consulting, training, technical assistance and research services for the Government of The Gambia, Government of Ghana, USAID, the World Bank, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, private companies and individuals.

Mr Bernard Otabil is a seasoned microfinance consultant, specializing in risk management, regulation and compliance. He has also worked on microfinance NGO transformation to profit oriented entities. He has worked for a number of microfinance entities in Africa. He has worked as a consultant in Microfinance for Triodos Investment Management (Netherlands), Blackwealth Consulting and Women’s World Banking, Ghana.

Malawi

He has over twenty years of audit and risk management experience, worked for Deloitte, Standard Bank Ltd and National Bank of Malawi. In his current position he is overall responsible for managing the risks such to ensure the bank’s assets are efficiently managed and that the bank is in compliance to all corporate governance issues.
